Manage Your Files in Style Three Things You Should Know About Data Delivery Services

What is ftp?

The recent events at Sony illustrate the pressing need for better file transfer services. Managed file transfer systems are used by businesses and other organizations to transfer data from one host to another. Data delivery services not only transfer data, they also help store data and provide backups in case any loss is sustained.

There are many data delivery methods to choose from. The following are three examples of systems and methods used in managed file transfer systems:

  • FTP: File Transfer Protocol, or FTP, is one of the most commonly-used transfer methods in IT departments. FTP is a network protocol used to transfer data from one host to another using a client-server. FTP uses different control and transfer mechanisms between the client and the server. It is the considered the preferred method of transferring files between computers.
  • SFTP: Secure File Transfer Protocol, or SFTP, shares a similar name with FTP but not much else. SFTP provides file transfer, access, and management services using a secure data stream known as Secure Shell, or SSH. SFTP is also known as SSH File Transfer Protocol.
  • Encryption: Encryption codes are a fundamental component of any secure file transfer service. Encryption is the process of “encoding” data, i.e. translating readable text, referred to as “plaintext,” into an illegible language known as “ciphertext.” The purpose of encryption is to protect digital information against hackers. Encryption uses an algorithm to create, as well as decode, the ciphertext. The two most popular types of encryption are symmetric encryption and asymmetric encryption.

Managed file transfer services can be incredibly complicated and are often a main priority in IT departments throughout the world. Transferring data efficiently and safely is a task every business wants to achieve. Look into the different kinds of managed file transfer systems today for the service that’s right for you and your company.

What do you think about file transfer services? Do you have any experiences yourself? Feel free to leave a comment at the bottom.
